the syrian government is now on the defensive. they are trying to defend itself, trying to find some sort of appeal to stay in power. you hear this time and time again -- they have so much confidence. we have been to syria so many times and they believe even with light weapons, we have seen territorial gains on the ground. they have been able to take territory. but you cannot call it liberated territory simply because everywhere remains a target. syrian fighter jet, artillery. at the end of the day, there are civilians, civilians caught in the crossfire. and anger is growing. people are worried about how will they find bread, fuel. life is becoming increasingly difficult for the people inside. winter, people are called. refugees in neighboring countries. some people are returning simply because life in exile to them is a slow death. they would rather cheat death inside. so, a very gloomy picture. the international community extremely worried about the post-assad days, talking about the possibility of even more chaos. >> thank you very much, indeed. an afghan policeman killed a u.s. contra

in self- defense when he confronted and shot a suspicious man he found back here behind this gas station. it all started with an officer on routine patrol as he passed the shell gas station at ed monton around 3:45 in the morning. he noticed a suspicious man behind the building. police say when the officer asked the man to come out from behind the building, the man pulled out a knife. >> the officer attempted to use a taser to stop the situation, but it was ineffective. the man refused repeated commands to drop the knife. >> reporter: police say fearing for his safety, the officer shot the man to the chest. he has been identified. he died from the gunshot back here at the scene. >> you have to be crazy to go towards the cop with something. >> reporter: this neighbor robert mills moved his family out of the city to avoid crime and realized that no place is immune to crime. >> life goes on, you have to do what you have to do. if you are religious, you pray and do what you can't to stay safe. >> reporter: some of the neighbors in this irare

increase in the deficit, the problem is it is not finance the oil. either have to eliminate the defense department or eliminate all civilian employees. you would not able to administer all this regulation if you don't do something about spending. even with tax increases, the kind i described in the previous question, would not be enough. ineffective regulation. effective regulation can be quite beneficial. in the automobile sector, the mileage requirement, but permits everybody to strive to a higher mark, up chiselling on the mileage stickers on cars. it improves our energy efficiency. that's a good thing. that is spurring growth. but the kind of reforms we have on wall street have not solved the problem. look at what happened last week's at usb, not only wild and irresponsible behavior, but then we have attorney general holder determining that he general holderubs the fullest -- attorney general holders a betty cannot prosecute ubs because he is afraid ubs is too big to shut down and would destroy financial markets. i thought dodd-frank was supposed to fix that. what was so disconcerti
